Supported protocols

xxter works with professional building automation and supports three primary protocols. The most options and reliability is offered with a KNX installation, which is completely integrated with the xxter unit and connects directly. For wireless solutions xxter offers an extension via EnOcean. xxter communicates with enOcean using the separately available external antenna. For the integration with advanced led and lighting equipment it is also possible to connect xxter to ArtNet DMX systems. Additionally, the installation can always be extended using home electronics, for instance from Philips Hue or Sonos.

KNX is known as an International Standard, a European Standard as well as a Chinese Standard. There are hundreds of registered manufacturers of KNX products, which all work together perfectly. Therefore you can rely on a brand independent and seamless integration of the entire automated home or building. Thanks to the built-in KNX integration of xxter, you can control and visualize all KNX products with xxter. xxter can also function as a bridge between KNX and the other protocols, to create a single integrated building automation.

enOcean

The EnOcean Alliance offers a wireless standard, which is also brand independent. A unique feature of EnOcean is that it does not work with batteries to provide power. Every wireless component always generates its own energy to function. The xxter device can be connected to the EnOcean network with the separately available external antenna, which allows you to integrate many different types of components. xxter can also function as a bridge between EnOcean and the other protocols, to create a single integrated building automation.

Modbus

You can integrate xxter with Modbus, via Modbus TCP. The xxter controller can act as a Modbus client (sometimes also called “master”), by connecting to a Modus server (sometimes also called “slave”). This means you can visualize Modbus data in the xxter app and use xxter to write to Modbus coils or registers, but you can also bridge KNX to Modbus and vice versa.

The use of Modbus is free for all our xxter customers and available on all HK02E or newer units.

BACnet

The xxter controller can act as a BACnet server (sometimes also called “slave”) so a BACnet client (sometimes also called “master”) can connect to it. This means you can use the xxter controller to make the KNX components available to BACnet for visualization and control. As a BACnet server, you can use xxter to provide BACnet with binary inputs, outputs and values, as well as analog inputs, outputs and values. You can add up to 1000 endpoints of each type.

With the use of ArtNet in xxter you can control DMX lights easily and use professional color lights in homes and businesses in an affordable and easy way. xxter can also serve as bridge between the different protocols. You can start a light show from DMX and automatically let KNX dim the room or include several DMX elements into a scenario together with KNX lighting.
